When I first experienced the Colorado Rocky Mountains, I knew this is where I wanted to be. Having come from “back East” like the first dude ranch visitors in the 1800’s and like so many of our guests today, I found the area captivating. Now, it is my privilege to share the wonder of it all with our guests...and we get to do it from the back of a horse! I met my wife, Lisa, while working as the general manager of the C Lazy U Ranch in Granby, CO. We are now co-owners and operators of the Latigo Ranch with Jim & Kathie Yost, and have been at it here since 1987. Lisa and I have 3 children, David, Spencer, and Hannah, and it has been a true blessing to be able to work together with them on the ranch. I am honored to serve on this board as we promote the Western lifestyle and history and support others who do the same in the grand tradition of dude ranching.

Unfortunately I wasn’t lucky enough to be born into it but I do feel like the luckiest guy alive to be a part of the original form of Wyoming tourism and hospitality….dude ranching. I have been involved in tourism since college days at University of Oregon, (Go Ducks!), as my first Summer was job was running boat tours and giving geology talks at Crater Lake National Park. Since those days I have been involved in the Ski Industry both in Colorado and Montana. Looking back it seems that I have done just about every hospitality related job out there and I sure get a chance to put those skills to work at the ranch. It was my love for horses and the outdoors that brought me to ranching but it was the road less traveled that brought me to Paradise.

I started my ranching career early on as a young guest at Elkhorn, MT. A number of years and many summer season later I started working for Elkhorn Ranch after graduating from Knox College, Galesburg, IL. Like most out of college my career path was not set, the winter months were filled with cooking at Lone Mountain Ranch in MT. This led to another direction; I graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in New York and returned to Montana to work in the culinary field. I returned to Lone Mountain Ranch and was the Food and Beverage Director. After that I opened up my own restaurant in Manhattan MT. This was a great eye opener for me to realize that the hospitality industry was fantastic, but I was missing something. The return to dude ranching came with the opportunity to work at the Red Rock Ranch as the manager for the MacKenzie family owned ranch. Here with my wonderful wife Addie and our two children Ellory and Paedon we have found our “home,” we are a part of the Red Rock Ranch family and a dedicated part of the larger family of dude ranchers.

My association with the DRA started in the summer of 1992 after visiting Lost Creek Ranch outside of Jackson Hole, WY. I was a dinner guest there and I observed that the gift shop did not have any items with their name or brand on it.
I taught jewelry making at the high school and college so I started designing jewelry with the ranch name and brand on it. My first customer was Lost Creek Ranch, and then the ranch next door Triangle X and then Heart Six wanted the jewelry.  My mission was to personally visit as many ranches as possible to get to know the people I wanted to build my business around. After visiting 57 dude ranches and driving hundreds of miles on washboard roads, I experienced so many sightings of wildlife, I put a Deer grill and sonic deer whistle to my Chevrolet SUV but my customer base was now built.
Now for the financial hurdle we all go through when starting a business, it is called "sacrifice." I had to sell my beloved 1939 Chevrolet coupe that had taken me 15 years and a second job to afford  to restore. (I thought I would add that in to let you know there was NO Government loan or grant that helped me.) I retired 8 years ago after teaching 31 years and was just in time for my business to quadruple.  I now had time to hit the road and do trunk shows at the ranches selling world wide jewelry to the guests of the ranches.  I drove 1,300 miles a week, once getting stuck in the mud at midnight on a dark ranch road far from anyone, and so many flat tires..ahhh! The good old days when gas was $1.25 a gallon.
The next leap in my business was when I started cutting detailed brands with the ranch names and branding deer skin and elk gloves.  I now brand gloves for 78 dude ranches plus saddle shops, veterinarians and private ranches you've referred to me. I have designed jewelry or belt buckles for 68 ranches. I have made a lot of friends along the way and acquired several nick names.  Ken Neal of T-Cross Ranch calls me  "The Peddler" but most of you know me as Jewelry Judy. Harold Turner of X2 Ranch calls me “Young Lady," and since I just turned 61, I will always love him for that.
In any business there are bumps along the way but the friendships are so valuable  to me, I cannot think of better people to be around. I have been participating in the DRA conventions since 1994 and always look forward to seeing my friends. I am honored and thrilled to be asked to be a part of the scholarship advisory board. I hope my educational background and years of learning the dude ranch business, help me with making good decisions.
I want to thank you for sharing your wonderful way of life with me.
Judy McMullin (AKA) Jewelry Judy!

I became an enthusiastic supporter of dude ranches from our family’s happy experiences as guests at the CM Ranch, an Association member situated in a spectacular location in the Wind River mountains, during the 1980s. Since 1990, down to the present, our family has owned grazing acreage and a residence nearby CM's location in the Dubois, Wyoming vicinity, where we spend time every year. We have visited or seen other dude ranches in the Wind River and Absaroka mountains area, as well as the Jackson Hole area. My daily business is as an attorney and counsellor, but my passion is the American Western experience. Our sons grew up going to dude ranches and a ranch camp in various summers. Learning not only riding, roping, fishing, hiking, and other outdoors activities, but also the values of responsibility, self-reliance, teamwork, honest labor and its rewards, and preservation and enjoyment of the Western environment. I hope, by participating in the Educational Trust, to see such opportunities and salutary values extended more broadly to others.

My wife, Laurence, and I left the hubbub of Jackson for the quiet of Ten Sleep, Wyoming and a new adventure owning a working cattle ranch. The landscape and life were so captivating we drove our family a bit crazy raving about the Ranch. In an effort to share the Ranch and natural beauty of this quiet corner of Wyoming we thought it might be an even greater adventure to open a guest ranch, and set off to become one of the newer members of the DRA. Both my wife and I have long careers in business, but none so personally involved and "full on" as what we have found in our Red Reflet Ranch Resort and Working Cattle Ranch with Airport Homesteads. It is our privilege to share this facet of Wyoming with our guests and try to work and live in harmony with the land.
